PRESENT ART TEACHING SUPPORT AND RESOURCES

 

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.Peninsula Fine Arts Center presents three free evening socials for parents through March and April, providing information, resources and educational art activities. The first of these events, a Homeschool Parent Open House on March 4, is followed by a two-part focus on Children and Art on March 26 and April 16.

 

With the current economic crisis, budget cuts are diminishing creative arts programs in public schools, says Executive Director Luci Cochran. Pfac is offering itself as a resource to children to develop their creative capacities, as well as to parents who are looking beyond what the school system can offer.

 

Homeschool Parent Open House is Thursday, March 4. Beginning with light refreshments at 5:30 pm, the program follows at 6 to 7 pm with Pfac Curator Michael Preble and Art Educator Janet Rash introducing Pfacs activities, programs and classes for children, along with a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility.

 

Children and Art is held in two parts. On Friday, March 26, the program starts at 5:30 pm with light refreshments, followed by Looking at Art With Your Children. Preble and Rash will lead a discussion about what children can learn by viewing art with their parents, as well as how to create hands-on art activities at home.

 

The second part of Children and Art is Friday, April 16 from 6-7 pm, with a reception at 5:30 pm. Preble and Rash will orient parents to the many activities and resources available to teach Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) in Pfacs Hands On For Kids activity gallery.

 

Artistic and creative skills have been shown to carry over into improving core-curriculum class performance, says Cochran. Many of the activities in our Hands on for Kids gallery are developed to support what children must learn to be successful in school.

 

Among Pfacs art resources, Discovery Baskets include hands-on, informational and interactive materials from Mali (a third grade SOL) and Egypt (a second grade SOL), available to be checked out to parents and classrooms.

 

Throughout the year Pfacs Studio Art School offers regular classes and workshops for children, teens and adults, as well as ARTventures Summer camps for kids. To accommodate special requests, classes can be arranged for groups of six or more. Classes and activities can be designed for Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, homeschooled students, adults, youth and children, as well as for themed birthdays and celebrations.
