PFAC PARTNERS WITH PUBLIC SCHOOLS

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.It takes a village to raise a child, and this summer Newport News Public Schools (NNPS) are partnering with the Peninsula Fine Arts Center (Pfac) to strengthen the knowledge and expertise of area teachers

All public schools teachers must meet licensure requirements as set by the state of Virginia, says Pat Franklin, Art Education Supervisor of NNPS. That means that every five years, a teacher must earn 180 points to qualify for their professional license.

Pfac is going to help. The partnership between NNPS and Pfac will allow NNPS art teachers to explore, expand and develop their art skills, and it will enable Pfac to offer more diverse classes.

Pfac has been offering art classes to the public for over 30 years. Designed for both budding and professional artists of all ages, Pfac offers watercolor, clay, sculpture, calligraphy, oil and acrylic, among many other mediums and experience levels.

Classes that count for teacher re-accreditation include clay, oil pastel, East Asian panting and marbleized paper, among others. The assortment of classes will count for various relicensure points.

Art teachers are responsible for registering for classes and for paying class tuition. Tuition for each class ranges from $60 to $250, depending on the length of the class and will be discounted for Pfac members.

NNPS and the Pfac have developed a growing partnership over the past few years through activities and events for both teachers and students. The art teacher relicensure classes will benefit NNPS, Pfac and the students of Newport News.
