The ALLI Awards, named for the sponsor, the Cultural ALLIance of Greater Hampton Roads, began in 1987 to provide a means for the arts and cultural community to publicly and collectively recognize the valued support they receive from businesses in the area. In 1992, the awards categories were expanded to include a category for Individuals (Volunteer) and the Media (radio, television and the press). Subsequently, two additional categories were added: Individual (Professional), and the Vianne B. Webb Lifetime Achievement Award.
To be considered for an ALLI Award the nominee must have directly benefited the arts and cultural community. Support may be in the form of cash grants, the loan of personnel, in-kind goods and services, education, space, volunteer hours, publicity or other means of assistance.
A panel composed of individuals representing the arts and humanities commissions from across greater Hampton Roads selects ALLI Award winners. Winner selection is based on the panel's judgment in its evaluation of the written nominations. Panelists decisions are based on their determination of the value and distinction of the nomination in promoting the arts and culture and the level of the nominees active involvement.
The Vianne B. Webb Award for Lifetime Achievement is named for the late WHRO Vice President for Public Radio Services. It is presented to an individual in recognition of continued active involvement in, and enthusiasm for, the cultural community in ways that carry on Vianne's vision and passion for the arts and culture.
